The travel bug is the best one to catch. Seeing the world, experiencing cultures and learning about people and places is high on most of our bucket lists. So, when you get the opportunity being prepared is important, which doesn’t mean packing the night before. In order to travel lightly (well, somewhat) and fashionably, you need to carefully consider what you will put in your suitcase.

The most obvious thing is to google what the weather will be like, this will help you with what materials and colours to bring. It is also important to research the places you are going in depth. For example, if you have done any research into traveling to Italy you will know that most of the roads are cobble-stone and therefore, completely unforgiving to any sort of high-heel (I learnt this the hard way). In which case it is important to pack nice, flat shoes rather than your going-out heels.

Another important thing is to be looking at your itinerary and the activities you will be doing throughout your trip and to pack appropriately. As tempting as it may be, avoid having a million options for nights out and focus on your daywear. Think also about things that don’t require ironing and can be washed and dried on the go.

One of the best tips I discovered in packing for my recent trip was to find a colour palate and stick to it. This means that everything goes with everything and can make your life on the road a whole lot easier. It also gives you heaps of options to layer items if it gets cold. For America, I packed black and kahki pants, dark jackets and an array of white, grey and nude/pinks tops, knits and sweaters. This meant that mornings were simply a choice between two pairs of jeans and then a lucky dip for what I was to pair it with.

When your packing for travel, think about the clothes you are putting in, does that top require a strapless bra? Does the sweater need a top underneath or is it something you find uncomfortable? One of the most important rules is if you don’t wear it at home, you won’t wear it overseas. Annoying clothes don’t magically get better after a plane flight, in fact those annoying things only get worse.

It may sound like an obvious one, but comfortable shoes are essential. This does not mean the pair of shoes you just bought that look comfortable, because new shoes are always a gamble no matter how flat or fur-lined. Comfortable means tried and tested comfortability, shoes you know you could walk kilometres in without blisters or that horrible foot arch pain.

Hope this helped your packing process! Keep planning your next adventure and stay lazy!
